best entry level roles for a career in art direction pls :)
The fastest way to become an art director is to start making images. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I started art directing when I took photos of myself for my first freelance story pitch to xoJane, and things pretty much snowballed from there. There are more opportunities for entry-level creative work in editorial than commercial.
Not assuming that this is you, but one of the biggest mysteries to me is the expectation of certain job seekers with no portfolio work to be considered for creative roles. You can’t wait for your first job to start creating things while your peers are taking initiative to pitch ideas directly to brands and magazines (websites?), or self-publishing on social media, versus waiting for permission or assignments to fall into their laps. You will forever be doomed in a role as an influencer liaison or some marketing drone who copy/pastes Instagram Insights into Google Slides if you never pick up your phone, make images, and turn them into something useful.
