I feel like we are angry at her for the wrong reasons, but we should be angry with her for the right reasons. For me, any celeb doing a betting app commercial gets an express admission to my black list. Once again nailed it, Annie!

I was thinking a lot about that — what other celebrities promote addictive vices? If I start pulling on that thread, we’d have to include celebs who promote alcohol, vapes, and every other addictive substance, which for arguments sake should include social media.

There is something particularly dark about the “innovation” of putting the ability to bet as an instant download in the pockets of every American, which is something you can’t do with alcohol or tobacco. At least with social media we can’t lose our life savings.

Honestly, I have some conservative takes when it comes to this. I think gambling ads should be illegal. As well as alcohol and tobacco. In Turkey where I was born and raised, even prescription medication ads are illegal (in addition to the previous list).

When it comes to celebs, I think it is especially grim that they would promote gambling when they are already rich, can promote pretty much anything they like and make money that way. SS did not need to make that ad one bit (financially). Maybe she aspires to be a billionaire like his BFFs.

The tread does come off fast though, agreed. There are plenty of celebs who don’t fw any of that though. So it is possible.

Social media is its own beast… I am still forming opinions on that beyond “it’s Bad” but my conservative views also carry over there as well.

I hear you, I'm on the same page on thinking there shouldn't be ads for things like prescription medication. At least there are more laws in place now than there were decades ago, when big pharma would literally bribe doctors to prescribe meds. It was a really wild time, in case you didn't know that was going on in the US!

Sydney's such an interesting case study because she's doing things that male celebs get away with, with very little scrutiny. Think of all the A-list men hyping crypto companies, for instance; even Lebron James is the spokesperson for a sports betting app!!

So true about SS and male celebs— so I don’t want to make this a gender issue (though some people do make it), it is mostly that I really hate celeb culture for all genders! I think she gets the heat because she so obviously plays into the “male gaze” of it all. Again, not novel whatsoever but triggering for many women indeed. What really gets me that she will call this empowerment. Just call it money! I’d respect that honestly more, tbf.
